Do colonoscopies require bowel cleansing?

Yes. Cleansing is crucial for a good examination and instructions will be given. Poor cleansing may require a repeat colonoscopy, which will be an additional cost.

Do gastroscopies require any bowel cleansing?

No. Cleansing is not required but you do need to fast for 6 hours before the procedure (no food or drinks).

How long will I be at the day centre?

You will be at the centre for up to 3 to 4 hours from arrival to the time of discharge. Your booking time is your arrival time and not actual your procedure time.  Delays can occur if some procedures before you took longer than expected.  Please understand some stays may be longer than expected.

Medicare card?

Yes. Having a valid Medicare card is a prerequisite to having the procedure at Ivanhoe Endoscopy Centre. Reciprocal card and overseas private insurance are not accepted.

Do I need to pay an out of pocket fee?

There is an out of pocket facility fee for most patients. Please ask for a quote from our receptionist upon booking an appointment. Fees are settled on the day of admission.

Do I need to pay another fee if I need to have a repeat procedure for any reason?

Yes.

Do I need someone to collect me from the clinic?

Yes. You must have someone to drive you home, and who can stay with you for the first 24 hours. If no one is available to get you from the clinic your procedure will need to be postponed to another day.

Can I catch public transport home?

No, under no circumstances do we allow any form of public transport alone(bus, taxi, uber ,trains, trams). You must be collected by a family member or friend who will then stay with you for the next 24 hours. Your procedure will be postponed to another day if you have not organised your pick up.

Are there any unexpected costs?

If you need ambulance transfer to a larger hospital for any reason you will be responsible for the ambulance cost. Additional fee for special equipments used to removed any polyp found during colonoscopy will incur additional charge. This charge will be explained when you book.

What about contraception?

Oral Contraception may not be effective for the month following colonoscopy preparation and the patient is advised to take other contraceptive precautions for the rest of the month.

Is a consultation required before a colonoscopy or gastroscopy?

It is recommended that you have a consultation before a procedure and feel free to request a consultation prior.  But if you are well with no serious medical issues you can book to have your procedure and consultation on the same day.

If you have a significant medical illness, are elderly or overweight you are required to attend a pre-anaesthetic consultation before booking your procedure.

What about my valuables on the day?

You must hand your all valuables to your family for safe keeping. If you decide to keep your valuables with you on the day, please note that Ivanhoe Endoscopy Centre does not take any responsibility for your valuables.

What about your normal medications?

You can take all your normal medications with a sip of water on the day of your procedure. This includes your blood pressure medications. However, some medications need to be stopped and we will advise you of this upon booking. Common examples that may need to be stopped prior are blood thinners and diabetic medications

Is there a cancellation fee?

Yes. An administrative fee of $50 is charged for any cancellation within 24 hrs of admission.

Are there any risks with a colonoscopy or gastroscopy?

Whilst the procedures are very safe, unexpected minor or serious complications can occur. Please see “Risks and complications(hyperlink)” for details.

What is the follow up after having the procedure?

You will be advised of the findings by our doctors before discharge. You will also be advised to see your GP in a week for a follow up consultation with any biopsy (tissue sampling) results.
