Facts about Colonoscopy
- Its performed under sedation or light anaesthetic
- Thorough bowel cleansing is required the day before. No solids to be eaten for 24 hours prior. You will be given clear instructions.
- Biopsies of the bowel or removal of polyps are often performed during the procedure
- We use carbon dioxide instead of air for distending the bowel during the colonoscopy and this eliminates post colonoscopy abdominal discomfort
- You will need someone to take you home on discharge
- Its a safe procedure. Though serious complications can occur it is quite uncommon.
- Colonoscopy and gastroscopy can be performed together on the same session if indicated
