Gastroscopy is an examination using a flexible video tube to look at oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine).
Usual reasons to have a gastroscopy include
- heartburn and indigestion
- difficulty swallowing
- abdominal pain
- weight loss
- checking for coeliac disease
Facts about gastroscopy
- its performed under intravenous sedation. Your throat may be sprayed as well.
- you need to fast completely for 6 hours. No other preparation required.
- biopsies are usually taken during the procedure
