Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule endoscopy is a new technique that is now available to investigate the small intestine. The procedure involves the swallowing of a small capsule which travels through the small intestine and is then excreted. As it travels through the small intestine it takes images which are transmitted to a recorder which is worn by the patient for the day. The procedure does not require any anaesthetic. It is mainly indicated for patients who have low blood count or anaemia with suspected blood loss from the small intestine. To have capsule endoscopy subsidised by Medicare, the patient must have specific indications for having the procedure that are recognised by Medicare. Pre-consultation with a gastroenterologist is necessary before booking the procedure.
